The Mini Worlds of Michael

  1. Finished the Indian figure

    03/11/09 15:54:05 | 6 Comments

Cool beanies, he's finished. Now I start working on his environment. Going to build him a roombox scene with trees, brush, a fire pit and other stuff I'll decide on while making the scene but first, the box. My mind is flooding with new ideas and staying on task is difficult. I always have trouble with that because I see in my mind so many new things I want to make and they are always crashing into one another in there. I keep a TV on all the time to help me focus. Don't know why it has to be the TV but music don't do it as well. Even with the TV on though, it's still hard to stay focused and on task. Speaking of TV, mine had a CRT brain fart and tossed up a series of numbers/letters which I can't clear off the screen. I'm not usually watching it while I sculpt but it's annoying when I do because the digits draw my eyes to them when I am watching it. I have a request for a way to get rid of that on doityourself.com (fantastic web site with very helpful people BTW) and hoping one of the people there will come up with an answer to this problem. Going to post a pic of the problem at the bottom to let them see what I'm talking about.

These numbers/letters are on the screen all the time now and I can't get them off. My cable company has a new set up with digital and gave me a remote to operate the TV and cable box. A few nights ago when I was turning the TV off, these numbers popped on and stayed...and the remote don't work now. I have to unplug the TV to turn it off and when I plug it back in, it's on already with these digits..grrrr. If I could somehow reset the set, maybe they would clear but I can't find a way to reset. Have I mentioned how much I hate the new cable system? Being I live in a hole where no OTA stations can be received, it's a must have. Satellite TV may be getting my business soon. Till then, I need to clear this crap off the screen before it's burned in..may already be.

  2. My Indian

    03/07/09 16:24:31 | 0 Comments

I got back to work on my Indian today and am getting closer. Tonight or tomorrow I'll start working on his surroundings. Due to my camera angle and that I had to flip the photo 90 degrees, he don't look quite proportional but in the final photos he will. I shot these with him standing on a tray on my lap so I was pretty limited for angles and distance. Have to do some better shots on this one, The Gourdfathers and the aliens. Been too busy making the pieces to take time to photograph them. I do need a better camera and once I get some items selling, planning to buy one. Of course, when you take a 3D object then mash it flat in a photo, it distorts to some degree no matter what and is where the saying "The camera adds 10 pounds" comes from..on a real human it does through the distortion..on these guys, it maybe adds a few ounces. ;-) The good thing about it is, when someone buys a piece from a picture, they are pleasantly surprised because when it's in their hands it looks far better.
Anyway, here's where he's at today.

    Stay tuned....
  3. Something different..and larger

    03/01/09 16:48:47 | 2 Comments

Been working on something different recently. I had a request from a neighbor who gets into Pepsi collectables and is doing a room with all things Pepsi..cool huh. From what I've been told, it sounds great. Unfortunately, I can't do stairs so I can't go look but the request was something to go in the Pepsi room. They have a door to a store room and in such a room, what better than to have a Pepsi machine for a door so guess what I've been making...you got it...a Pepsi machine. :-) Not a mini one, a faux machine in full size..or not quite..it's a little taller and narrower but it came out real well. I painted the door then made buttons, coin drop plate, trim and the coin return slot.
The door is leaning a bit here so that threw the pic off a bit but it's all straight.

Here's the photo I was working from

A little blurry but here's the hand painted buttons and coin plate. I made the coin plate from wood then covered it with bare metal foil.

A closer view of the coin plate

And here's a pop ready for the taking..if it weren't flat anyway.

I have completed another alien and am finishing another but haven't taken any pics of them yet. Also working on a Gourdfather fortune teller..guess she'll be more like a Gourdmother but whatever. ;-)

    Stay tuned.....

  4. The Doctor is in.

    02/13/09 10:55:41 | 3 Comments

    Welcome Doctor Beloge

First came Xzowath then through the gate came the doctor, Beloge. As part of the greeting, Xzowath promised to share things from his world as the people on our side agreed to share whatever we have of use to them. Beloge came to show some new medical techniques. The mobsters are getting nervous with all the vampires and aliens moving in and now establishing a permanent gateway in the back of a barn the mobsters were using for gambling. The good doctor has been eyeing some of the mobsters for experiments but they don't know this yet.

    Meet Doctor Beloge

All of the Gourdfathers have a hiden compartment for stashing whatever you can fit in it and the hands on most are positioned to hold pens, pencils or whatever will fit.

Here's the residents of Dogsquatstopee so far. Some of these are still in the works.

Here's a progression of the making. First is a nasty uncleaned gourd then one after scrubbing.
In the back from left to right is after I made a skull and put on the wire for arms, legs and hands. Next is forming the face. The one with just a skull is for another alien where the next is for a more human Gourdfather and his is a more human skull. After the face is formed, I make eyeballs, finish the face then add the clay hands over the wire. Last is after costuming. I make the costumes on the Gourdfather then add the embelishments. There are many more steps in between but this is the major highlights.

Still waiting on beads for my indian..he's looking awesome but I'll wait to post pics until I have him beaded. He isn't one of The Gourdfathers but a more realistic sculpture.
    Stay tuned....
  5. The visitor

    02/12/09 16:52:45 | 0 Comments

Extra extra..read all about it. He came from another universe.

It was a peaceful day in Dogsquatstopee and all the people were doing their business harvesting the crop when something unusual happened. Of course, in such an unusual place, this should be viewed as usual. There was a disturbance like nothing the people had ever seen. It was a flash of light so bright as the sun then bolts of lightening from a central point radiating out only a couple feet forming a doorway..but not a doorway. A gate perhaps? No, not really a gate either..it was like the air opened into another world and someone stepped through.
This creature shocked and thrilled the people of Dogsquatstopee. He introduced himself as xzowath (yes, pronounced just as it looks he said) and he's the supreme commander of a force which would be entering this universe soon. He said they aren't hostile but that's to be seen. Judging from the grand entrance he made, times may get very interesting in Dogsquatstopee.

Our roving reporter got some pictures...

  6. Then there were 3

    02/02/09 19:51:04 | 2 Comments

Yes, I finished another of The Gourdfathers today and this one is more of a Valentines one. None have names yet but will as I make their cards.

And gained some ground on my Indian as well... He's far from finshed but progressing. Note the tiny little eagle feathers. I figured out a good way to make them but they are a one at a time thing.fun though.

    Stay tuned....

  7. A couple of the guys

    01/30/09 17:43:24 | 3 Comments

Hi there. Well, I have costumed 2 of The Gourdfathers and here they are. We have a Wizard and a Vampire so far and more to come. While I'm at it, I'm also doing an Indian who'll be holding the buffalo skull you'll see at the feet of The Gourdfathers..it's not finished yet and the Indain looks like a mummy but it's no where near finished yet so stay tuned...it's going to be awesome.

  8. More confessions of a clay junkie

    01/27/09 18:16:15 | 1 Comments

Sooooo...it's been a while since I did an update so I better get to it. The Gourdfathers have evolved and my interests are turning. I decided to go off my beaten path and do some different stuff so my Gourdfathers are becoming more like trolls, little vampires and stuff like that. I'll still be doing my scenes but needed a break though some of my scenes may be a little darker. These little fellows are more just for something fun. On these (The Gourdfathers) I'll be using some found items/ thrift store finds for embelishments on their costumes. Right now they're...as they say in the backwoods..."they's nekkidd"..but I'll be starting costuming soon.

    image

^^^ what a messy bench...but I know where everything is so no worries. To the right is one that I just finished the skull on. He still needs skin.

    image

^^^^...the...heads..of the organization. image HAHAHA, I kill me...er..ok, never mind.

    image

^^ a couple more heads and some with their gourd bodies.

    image

^^aren't they cute...you want one, I know you do.

    image

^^^ but "they's still nekkidd" so you'll have to wait for they to get their costumes.

Since these are more just for fun and using found items in their clothing, they'll be much less expensive when they do go up for sale. Going to sell these on Etsy and I'll let you know when they are done and up for sale.

    Tune in again. image

  9. Confessions of a clay junkie

    12/29/08 07:12:54 | 2 Comments

Needing a break from some other works while giving them some dry time, I turn my focus to my little town of Dogsquatstopee Kansas. It was a nice little town named by Indians back in the 1800's founded by gourd growers but times are a changin' and the goons started coming in for some of the action of the gourd farms. Soon disorganized crime bosses started gaming parlors in back rooms of qwonset huts with farmer' markets as a front, cheap liquor started coming in, drugs and hookers and now the town is filled with questionable characters. Why, the population nearly doubled from the 3 it used to have up to 5 in just 120 short years. I tell ya, the big city life is taking it's toll on the town of Dogsquatstopee and as more strangers move in, things could get pretty scarey for the townsfolk.
Here, let me introduce you to the 2 newest residents..

These are "The Gourdfathers", (in case you haven't figured it out yet, Dogsquatstopee is my little imaginary world where all the people are made of clay and their bodies will be made from gourds)

These two works in progress are Cecil "the cigar" Bartoni, he's one of the bosses that runs the gambling ring. He got his name from people who've cheated his organization..."he smoked 'em like a cheap cigar". The one to the right is Nickie "knuckle duster" Marcone who got his name from his brass knuckles he likes to use. Nickie is one of the enforcers and works for several of the bosses. His brass knucks have NKDM engraved in them over each finger hole so he leaves a lasting "impression" on all the people he's sent out to persuade to get their mind right.

So far, they are ahead of their time..hehe..get it...a head...er..ok, never mind..and the wires laying about are the armatures for their arms and legs.

    image

I'm starting with skulls I made from paper mache using recycled junk mail as the pulp..I figured why shread all the credit card offers and other crap mail just for landfill...may as well use it for something more and the fabrics, embelishments and other materials will be recycled stuff that would end up being landfill where ever I can. After I make a skull, leg/arm bones over the recycled electric fence wire armatures, I cover them in an epoxy for added strength then start working the clay on then after the bake, I'll add the gourd bodies and make the costumes.

Each will hold a secret..but I'm not at liberty to say what that is at this time...Nickie the Knuckle Duster can hear me so I better keep that to myself for now.

  10. Here she is...

    12/24/08 17:47:08 | 2 Comments

Since I decided to make something different for my visitor here, I can now show what I've been up to lately. I call this one.."All Creatures" and it's an entirely hand-made (except for the rubies and white topaz in the crown and the brass name plate) OOAK sculpture in polymer clays, PMC, plaster, wood and epoxies. The crown is hand-made by me and 99.9% pure fine silver which I set rubies and white topaz stones into sterling silver settings. I have 315 hours in this work as each piece was made one at a time and each flower petal and leaf is hand detailed.

  11. Ok, a wee hint at what I'm up to

    12/18/08 16:58:55 | 0 Comments

Guess I better update my blabberins here.

Had a bit of a clay disaster a couple days ago, seems my clay oven thought I was making witches so decided to burn them at the stake..ok, that blows...I wasn't making witches..though I have in the past but these were ...oops..I can't say what they were because one who checks my blog is going to get one of these and it's gonna be a surprise but I will say, I'm in the process of re-making but rather then doing the bake with several sculpts in the oven, I'm going to try restricting my artist ADD and work on one thing at a time. I get so many projects going at once I get none done. Another good thing here is, if I have another mishap, at least I'll only lose one sculpt rather than 3 which took an average of 1.5 weeks each to get to the point of going into the oven. I need a better and more accurate oven for this but being I dis'ed Santa in my last rant, he said..."call me lardass did ya?? weelllll see if I get you a spindle sander or an oven... you can kiss my lardass... so ho ho ho this .....punk". Oh well..that'll teach me. oops.

Anyway, I'm making clay flowers for this scene I'm working on now and can show where I'm at in the process. I still have a butt-load to make and a lot of detailing on the ones I have done. I'll also show the baseplate for this scene because this one's going to someone who's not looking in here.

Still a long ways to go but they'll get there.

    Stay tuned....

  12. Base plates and Santa Claus

    12/12/08 11:22:20 | 0 Comments

Soooo..it's been a while since my last blubberin's so I figure it's time to blubber on some more. Welll...I've been busy but unfortunately, I can't share here what I've been busy with yet. There are a few more projects which I can't yet share either BUT, I will show some base plates I've been working on. I'd been given some black walnut slabs which are just amazing in the grain...not just it's character but it's color...just amazing browns, blacks, creams and some reds...just beautiful..hope the pics will show the colors. Unfortunately, a lot of that will be covered up by what's going to be mounted on them..but I will leave a small reveal around the outer edge so a little of this fantastic figuring isn't all covered. I'm not done sanding the tops yet...have to leave most of it rough but the reveal will be polished when I'm done.

Talk about a pain in the arse to sand ..weeeeeeeeeeeell doggie!!! I need a good spindle sander...maybe Santa will read this and get me one...unfortunately, I'm such a bad little boy that all I see of Santa is when he lands the sleigh on my roof and bails out to go visit the bad little girls down the street for a few hours dropping a condom wrapper and few empty Viagra blister packs. A while later, he comes stumbling back with a silly grin singing "Th' weather outside is frightful, but those girls made me feel delightful...I really don't want to go..what a blow what a hoe...HoHoHo." And he loads his big arse into the sleigh leaving me nothing but reindeer poop all over my roof to clean up. That's ok, This year I'm jackin' the sleigh and going joy riding while he's gettin' merry down the street. I'd keep it but that'd be unfair to the kids..but I'm looking through the bags though...and snagging any tools, big screens and whatever else I like...HoHoHo this..lardass..hehe You have any idea how hard it is to clean dried reindeer poop off a roof?

But I digress......hey...have a look at the base plates and if you were expecting a big screen TV this Christmas...oops...sorry. ;-)

  13. Cats, rats and...FOOD

    11/17/08 19:21:47 | 4 Comments

Today was rat & cat day. I made some of each for the drunk scene and baked them along with some other items for the scene and the hooker scene. Euwwwwwww you say...the strangling baked some cats and rats...yes I did.and they were quite tasty. Kidding of course.
I'll be adding fur to them so they won't be so nekkidddd.

While those were baking however..and cooling off I decided to make a feast for Christmas. These are for a Santa scene I'm starting and hope to have done before Christmas. This is going to be a really cool roombox. Not going to go too much into it yet..but you're gonna love it. ;-)

Above is some ham, candied yams and a veggie dish. There's going to be much more but just doing these made me hungry. I did learn something...clay tastes like shyte. :-P

They will look even more realistic after I bake them and put the glaze on.

I know what you're thinking...yes, I have my Mrs Cleo crystal ball out...figured I better get some use out of it since I spent $19.95 for it late one night while watching TV..you're thinking..."Man, this guy's work is amazing, totally awesome, I wanna marry this guy because if he's this talented in the little things, he has to be fantastic in other things. "..am I right?..huh, am I?......crap, Ok, well, what can one expect for $19.95 from an informercial.
You gotta admit though...I do have a lot of patience...and the other thing that becomes aparent is...I really need to get out more often.
    Ham sammich anyone?

    It's the little things....

Hello again and welcome to my tiny world of weirderness. Sammy, our friend who's holding down the sidewalk here hasn't said much today. Just mumbled some stuff about my making too much noise playing in the trash...or maybe it was he was playing with the hookers and got a rash, dunno for sure.

I've decided for sure the hookers and the drunk will be separate scenes (especially if Sammy got a rash from them) so it's on to making the tiny stuff that'll add realism to the scenes. There'll be rats & cats, trash, beer cans, bottles, paper, boxes, junk all about in the scene with the drunk and I'm sculpting them in polymer clay. Below you can see some items ready for baking..part of the fire plug, a pay phone and parts for the light that'll be above our inebriated friend, the fire plug part and phone are for the hooker scene.

Here I've covered the trash cans in thin aluminum and will age and stain them as well as metalized the beer cans so they're ready for painting. There's the rest of the fire plug for the hooker scene also and the beginnings of the cat for the drunk scene. Don't judge him yet, I just started working on him. Again, I use no molds, patterns or prefab items for my scenes but do eventually plan to make castings of some things. These will be casts of my own work. What I'm doing now are all one-of-a-kind so if you're wanting something truly unique, better buy up some of what I'm doing now. When I do start casting however, the numbers of what I do will be limited, numbered and cataloged with COAs...which come with anything I do now also.

Another angle of items for the scenes. There is a dental pick, 6 inch scale and xacto knife in the pics here...you can get an idea of the scale by comparison.

Below are some supplies that will become the housings for my roomboxes.

    More soon....

    Voices from the clay

You know how sometimes something just don't seem right...like something you're working on is speaking to you in some tiny voice wanting so badly to be heard? (Ok, maybe it's just some psychosis in my own head which may go away if I took the medications..hehe..kidding..actually, I like the voices, they keep me company)..anyway..when I'm working on a scene or figure, I'm there..interacting with them, talking with them and living their life. Before you call the guys with the rubber lined truck, it's always been this way and I like it.
Back when I first started making my little worlds I was really into the old west type scenes as my only building materials were well suited for that. I started with match sticks making little saloons, cabins and ended up building a whole town with them as well as carving tiny people, horses, wagons, etc. As I worked on them, I was there. I could smell the horses, hear the wagon wheels squeaking and the piano down at the saloon. I could hear the people talking as they passed down the boardwalk and the boards creaking as they stepped along and could see the town, people and activity. It was as if I were seeing it through the eyes of someone who was/is there and would often write the story that I was seeing..or living as I would construct my little world..and still do sometimes. Yes, I see you dialing the 1-800-looneytunes crack-pot hot line but while taking the long way around the barn, I am heading someplace with these ramblings.
I started working on the scene..or set...for the hookers and the drunk which was to be all in one but just couldn't get moving on it...something wasn't right then when I stopped to listen, the drunk called out to me..between his passing out and retching..no, not obscenities this time but saying he has his own story, his own world and would like to be alone in it. He wants people to see him alone, lost and without hope. The hookers weren't too happy with this because they wanted to see the dog peeing on him...and waiting to see if he had any money on him but what can you say..they have their own story now and the drunk didn't need that humiliation in his story....what, did they think he was a Rockerfeller just slumming it?

    The drunk and trash cans

Ok, back to work on my drunk and the other parts for the scene.

If you scroll down to a week or so ago you'll see a pic of the drunk in question...he's next to the dog and he's naked and bald. Poor fellow, I couldn't just leave him all nekkiddd now could I??.. I made him some clothes...and hair. He woke up long enough to ask what the hell I was doing, call me a homo pervert, puke then pass out again. Some folks just don't appreciate the kindness of a stranger...and most will agree that I'm stranger than most.

Hard to see the bottle in his hands but I turned that on my wood lathe from acrylic rod.

After I bake the trash cans, I'll coat them in metal and age them. Still have to make a fire hydrant which in the finished scene, He'll b e laying against with the dog hiking his leg.

    More soon......

  17. Yessy Gallery

    11/10/08 17:58:16 | 1 Comments

Not a lot to report today. Just worked on my Yessy site for selling my work.
Now you can see more of what I have done and buy some if the mood strikes you. image
is an on-line gallery that offers a free trial for artists and if you like how it goes, you can allow the trial to turn into a yearly pre-paid site to sell your work. The yearly fee is pretty reasonable and they offer the shopping cart, billing and notification with a very reasonable transaction fee (charged to the seller). I have a site there, it's
    http://www.yessy.com/mjamespinto

Come see what I do and look at the works of thousands of other fine artists.

I've been a member of Yessy for a year but due to the problems of showing the intricate details of my work in photographs, I haven't done much with it till now. I hope I have good enough photos this time but will be adding more detailed shots because I really need to get some art out into the world and due to my mobility...or lack of mobility, taking it to distant places will be difficult...but when spring comes, that's the plan.
Back to the art works tomorrow.

    Dog n such

I finished doing the hookers...er...I mean...making them...ok, that didn't sound right either...ummm..sculpting them..yeah, that's it and doing the dog...no, not THAT kind of doing it, here's a few pics.

Still trimming the hair on the dog but you get the idea. He'll be peeing on the drunk in the street scene I'm doing with the hookers. The last pic is a sculpt in the works. I put that on so you can see part of the process the hookers went through as well as the drunk and dog.

Once I make the clothing for the drunk, I'll be starting the rest of the street scene.

    Hookers & drunks

Ok, had to take a few days off from the egg. Doing that tiny work even under the scope is pretty rough on the eyes and nerves so I've been working on another, larger work. This one is a roombox scene of an urban area..a kind of street scene a bit larger than 1:12 scale (dollhouse). Usually, I don't go with an exact scale. I call my scale...eyeball scale..which is to say, I make a sculpture of a human or animal then build everything else associated with it to that scale. Once in a while I'll build to an exact scale...say...if someone commissioned a railroad scene or wanted a setting for an art doll or collector doll of some kind I'd build to that scale but usually, it's eyeball scale which works out well for me.
This roombox has a tentative name of "52nd Street" and is a scene set out in front of an adult bookstore with a pawn shop on one side and a liquor store on the other. I've sculpted the 2 hookers (in polymer clays) and have the clothing done for one so far (she's HOT) and have started the clothing for the other. I've also sculpted the drunk who'll be passed out near the entrance of the liquor store and just finished the dog who'll be peeing on the drunk. Soon as I finish the clothing for all the figures and the fur for the dog, I'll begin making the box and the buildings inside, the sidewalk, trash, manhole covers, lights, etc. I'll post pics of the hookers, drunk and the dog in the next couple days. You can see one of the hookers in the background of one of the photos I posted recently (to the left of the egg). She wasn't too far along in that shot but she's done now.
It's going to be a very challenging scene but I like that...figuring out how to make an effect and experimenting with different materials to scratch-build the items for the scene.

    More soon......

    Egg on my face

Ok, not really on my face, on my workbench..but to be more exact, eggshells. Today I'm under the scope working on some tiny fishermen to populate this egg world I'm creating. The lake, trees and mountains are finished (see pics) and now it needs some life. If you look closely at the photo of the glasses, you'll see the little fisherman I'm working on now. Look at the area by the nose bridge. The little blue dot is the fisherman I'm working on. The insulin syringe to the side is one of the carving tools I use as well as fine razor knives and some tiny sculpting tools I made myself.
Man, It's tough to photograph inside an eggshell. To see it in person, it looks like it goes on for miles.

I'm also posting a couple photos of some bigger "roombox" miniatures I've made. They have some flash flair off the glass but I'll be posting some better shots of them soon. I hand make every piece of every one of my miniatures without the use of molds so each is unique and a one-of-a-kind.

    Welcome to my world

Hello there. I am Michael (or Mick), a professional miniaturist who is working on getting my work seen. While I do many forms of art, hand-made, one-of-a-kind miniature scenes (or worlds) is by far my favorite of all the forms because it involves such a wide array of all forms of art to some degree..sculpture, wood, painting, glass, metal, light, music, etc..all blended to create miniature worlds which people often get lost in while viewing. Some call this Diorama..which it is but this isn't the average "buy some stuff and figures then arrange them on a board" works or build a model scene (though I have seen some of these which were very nicely done)...not by a long shot. Mine are entirely hand-made often spending several hundred hours (many under a microscope) sculpting each individual part from raw materials (wood, clays, metals, precious metals, etc) then landscaping and assembling the scene inside enclosures I make myself or inside egg shells, gourds or other natural enclosures to make the viewer feel as though they can just walk into the scene and live there for at least the moment.

Over time, I'll be posting photos of finished works, not only miniatures but paintings, limestone sculptures and other art forms for you to look over as well as photos of works in progress and studio shots.

I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy creating them. Please feel free to invite friends to view my works and maybe, if I'm lucky, my work will be seen by gallery owners, exhibit promoters or others who may want a one-of-a-kind work by me.

    Thanks,
    Michael
